Technology: the state-of-the-art for environmental impact

Technology is our greatest ally in innovating our business, optimizing the use of natural resources, and turning our footprint into positive environmental impact. That’s why our facilities have always invested in advanced equipment, not only for best-in-class production but also for improved efficiency and energy self-production, as well as waste and water management.

Nature provides us with invaluable inspiration and raw materials: but only technology can help us protect our planet – and the People who live on it.

WHAT WE DO TO RESPOND TO CLIMATE CHANGE

We can keep growing only in the name of sustainability, actively tackling one of the most urgent global challenges we have ever confronted: climate change.

WE HAVE A DEDICATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
We have appointed a specific committee to oversee environmental issues, maintain standards and make progress. Our European plants have already earned the ISO 14001 certification, and all the others will soon implement similar certified systems.

Our roadmap to lower emissions

The smart use of energy is rooted in our corporate philosophy. Indena has always been oriented and committed to saving energy, reducing consumption and achieving high levels of energy self-production. Our biggest goal is to manage growing energy needs in a sustainable way: a complex challenge that requires a variety of interconnected actions.

Energy use and emissions reductions

Thanks to our investments in energy efficiency and renewable sources, we have progressively reduced our absolute energy consumption in the past few years.
We have installed several photovoltaic plants in all of our manufacturing sites, in order to sustainably self-produce energy and reduce purchases from non-renewable sources; we expect to reach and surpass 4 MW of photovoltaic power generation by 2026.

  • At the Settala production site,in addition to the cogeneration plant that covers over 70% of the plant’s electricity needs, a 200-kWp photovoltaic plant has been installed to produce energy exclusively for the site, which has been operational since 2023.

  • At the Bernett site, a new photovoltaic plant with an output of approximately 800 kWp began operating in 2023; this is sufficient to satisfy about 20% of the site’s electricity needs, while selling a small part of the self-produced energy back to the national grid.

  • At the Tours production site, the photovoltaic plant installed in 2018 continues to produce approximately 200 MWh of energy per year.

  • At the Milan site, a new 101-kWp plant was activated in 2024.

Water management

  • We pay close attention to how water is managed in our production sites: to this end, we have implemented a system to monitor withdrawals at each plant

  • We especially focus on the purification of water discharges, which requires the careful management of process water and other water before releasing it back onto the environment or sending it to public purification plants, in compliance with current legislation.

  • Our plants have progressively decreased water consumption compared to the 2022 baseline: a positive result that can be attributed to a more-than-proportional increase in the water re-injected into the system compared to withdrawals.

Waste management

  • Our environmentally responsible approach is reflected in a waste management system that monitors the entire process from production to recovery or disposal

  • In the past few years, we have destined to recovery over 90% of waste – mostly byproducts of plant-based raw material processing and solvent extraction, liquids from biomass extraction, halogenated organic solvents, and wastewater washing solvents

  • In addition to an ISO 14001-certified system to effectively monitor and manage waste recovery and disposal, Indena has a support software to record loading and unloading of all substances.
  • With the objective of reducing waste at the source and sorting an increasing quota of any recyclable material, we pay special attention to training our operators on these issues and to periodically audit our systems’ effectiveness.

  • Alternative recovery channels are also actively explored at all times, encouraging the recycling of packaging as well.
